Aftermath

What a day. My like-minded friends and I have spent most of the day in a general malaise. As usual, Jen expressed it better than I could:

For the first time in my 32 years, I am ashamed of the South.

This is the immediate reaction. We both love the South deeply, but at the same time, we struggle to understand our neighbors. Although, it's quite irresponsible for Yankee elitists (and I know of several) to place too much blame at the foot of the South. Last time I checked CNN's electoral map, there was lots of red in lots of cold states.

I've got a serious case of red-state blues. So how's the weather in Montreal, eh?

What shocks me the most is that I keep hearing about how we are a "Christian nation" but we just elected the guys who are pro-war, pro-gun, pro-corporation, pro-death penalty, against funding healthcare, and believe by and large that the poor are just lazy and need to get better jobs. I must have completely missed that book of the Bible.

The South and other rural areas pay LESS of the tax burden and soak up MORE of the federal dollars than the rest of the country. Yet they are the ones complaining about taxes. No, that's not shooting themselves in the foot. Wait til we all have to start paying for Bush's spending spree.

That is going to SUCK.

If the weather and beaches weren't so great here, and my family weren't so entrenched, I would definitely be begging Charlie to move somewhere else.
