Retry? Fail. Abort.

Because I had such a great experience last time I tried to install Windows XP SP2, I figured, "What could possibly go wrong? I'll try it again, and this time, it will work." So, so wrong. But the Windows Update system tray icon was taunting me. I had to do it's bidding.

Same thing. System crash, "WinSrv can not be loaded," etc. A few attempts to go into Safe Mode, and somehow, miraculously, the Windows XP SP 2 installer came up and said that the install did not complete successfully and that the program would be uninstalled.

When it was uninstalled, everything on the system was still available. But something was wrong with my display adapter. The Display sheet would not let me change the monitor from the hardware default, and VgaSave - the Windows fallback adapter - had taken the place of my usual display adapter. The low refresh rate is driving me crazy.

It's clear now that what I need to do is back up everything on the computer, reinstall Windows XP to SP1 (and never go past SP1), and then buy a new computer. Maybe it will be a G5.

Oh. And there was also the part where your wife threatened to kill you if she wasn't able to access four years' worth of her stored junk on that computer. But it had a happy ending after all.
