May Mix

Here's the track list from a mix CD I made:

  1. The Thrills - Big Sur - I think this is a great opener. I love the synth and the banjo. Can't wait to see them on Lollapalooza this year. They played in Nashville a couple weeks ago when I was there but I didn't find out until the next day.
  2. Starsailor - Poor Misguided Fool - Good songwriting.
  3. Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out - I like the extended intro and the switch to the disco style.
  4. The Decemberists - Los Angeles, I'm Yours - What an incredible song. Beautiful melody and progression built around major sevenths, clever lyrics. Plus, they were on NPR's Marketplace awhile back. Has anyone noticed that whoever does the bumpers and selects bands to interview for Marketplace has incredible taste in music?
  5. The Coral - Dreaming of You - Nice baritone sax. Reminds me of Madness.
  6. The Bangles - Tear off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution) - This mix has its share of covers. What an amazing job on this song. It blows Elvis' away, IMHO.
  7. Vines - Ride - Already in an iPod commercial, I see.
  8. Big Star - September Gurls - Still in the Bangles mood. This is the only song I know by this band, but I'm sure I would like them because they influence everybody.
  9. Kula Shaker - Hush - They were gone too soon.
  10. Travis - Re-offender - It's actually growing on me a little less everytime I hear it.
  11. Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules - Mad World - The version with the sweet drum track.
  12. Holly Golightly - Use Me - I just found out that this is a cover, too. Nothing new under the sun.
  13. Flaming Lips - Fight Test - Did I mention I can't wait for Lollapalooza. Plus Morrissey!
  14. Superdrag - Her Melancholy Tune - A Beatles song if I ever heard one.
  15. Ash - Shining Light - Some of my favorite pop song lyrics ever.
  16. Frente - Horrible - They really weren't gone too soon, but the exclamation point was.
  17. R.E.M. - All The Way to Reno (You're Gonna Be a Star) - Too bad the number of great tracks on the average R.E.M. album has fallen to, like, two. This was one.
  18. Apples in Stereo - Baroque - They're great. I missed them when they were in Carrboro.
  19. Rooney - Blueside - Possibly the best pop song of last year? For some reason, reminds me of Brian Wilson.
  20. The Silent League - Breathe - Recommended by Salon.com's Wednesday Morning Downloads feature. I liked it better when Radiohead recorded it and called it Creep. Still nice, though.
  21. Jet - Look What You've Done - I liked it better when the Beatles recorded it and called it Sexy Sadie. Still pretty great, though.
  22. Echobelly - Fear of Flying - Downloaded from Echobelly.com. Still a great band, but not quite as hooky as their earlier stuff.
  23. They Might Be Giants - Caroline, No - One of my favorite bands covering one of my favorite songs.

What a fabulous list. I'm not even sure I've heard all of these tracks. Sometimes I miss my iPod. Heh heh.
