In America and Club Dread

The queue this weekend featured two films: In America and Club Dread.

First, Club Dread. Meow, I had high hopes for this one considering how much of a pleasant surprise I found Super Troopers. And it did have its share of moments mining that wahfer-thin line between revulsion and humor. The writing wasn't quite up to scratch, though. I still have faith in the Broken Lizard folks, though. And I'm glad we actually have comedy troupes making movies these days. Two stars.

In America was amazing. The two girls were amazing. The credits indicated that they are real-life sisters and that probably had a lot to do in terms of developing their on-screen chemistry. I can't remeber where else I've seen the Mom but she was great also. I was surprised at how much humor was in it, as I was prepared for a somber immigrant story, but instead found a comic touch infused throughout the drama. I thought it took place in the present day and that theaters in New York just show E.T. any old time, but Jen correctly pegged it as early-eighties. Maybe they'll do a sequel to let us know how they are coping now. Maybe that's not necessary. Four stars.
