The Station Agent

1 Comment Last night we watched The Station Agent, and I can definitely recommend it. My dad had suggested this one, but I knew nothing about it. I thought it was a British film. I think I had it confused with The English Patient (the titles do kinda rhyme), which I have also never seen, and God willing, never will.
This one is pretty much a character study of three major and a couple additional minor figures. Fin is a train aficionado loner dwarf who inherits a train station in a small town. He just wants to hang out and watch trains, but townspeople keep bugging him. One character, Joe the hot dog vendor, stole quite a few of the scenes with his easy affability and humor.
An extra bonus was the soundtrack, which was composed by Stephen Trask, who wrote the music for Hedwig and The Angry Inch. Speaking of which, I found out that there's a sort of Hedwig tribute album out with the likes of Rufus Wainwright, They Might Be Giants, and Ben Folds. "Wicked Little Town" always evoked R.E.M. to me - the melody and meter is very Stipey - but I'm sure The Breeders do a fine job of it. I may have to pick this one up.
