Chicago with Earth, Wind, and Fire

I wasn't quite sure what to expect of this concert. I couldn't name one song by EWF before the show and all the songs I know by Chicago are either treacly mid-tempo ballads or weird seventies jazz-rock fusions (which I tend to like better).

I was very pleasantly surprised. The two bands shared the stage at both the beginning and end of the concert. Their music blended very well. EWF brought the shake-your-arse party and funk, while Chicago leaned more on their trademark horn section.

EWF delivered familiar songs that I didn't know were theirs: "September," "Boogie Wonderland," and "Shining Star." Their bass player was totally pimped out and had way more energy than I'll ever have. I believe I got a bit of a lesson in "da funk."

When Chicago returned, there was no "You're The Inspiration" or "Will You Still Love Me?" (though I kinda missed that one). In their place was "I'm a Man," "Saturday In The Park," and "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" Vocal duties were shared mostly by the bass player and keyboard player, with EWF's Philip Bailey returning for "If You Leave Me Now."

The big finale was a rip-roaring version of "25 Or 6 To 4" with both bands. The crowd was very diverse in age and race, and from what I could tell, a splendid time was enjoyed by all.
