City of God

I just saw a remarkable film, City of God. It was recommended by Netflix, so I took a chance. It's about gang warfare in a slum of Rio. It shows a city where the majority of people live in abject poverty, with little hope of escape or advancement, and far from the beaches and celebrations typically associated with Rio.

If you closely follow the numerous characters, you see some of them reappear unexpectedly as the story twists along through the sixties and seventies. It's also very stylishly shot and edited. A great film with echoes of Tarantino, Amores Perros, and Goodfellas.
