Good Stuff From Slate

One of my mostist favoritist Web sites, Slate, has a couple of good things going today.

The first is a quiz that shows where you fall on the red to blue cultural -- not political -- spectrum. For example, I live in the very red state of South Carolina and spend most of my time in the light-red (pink?) city of Charlotte, so it's hard not to know what a winged number 3 bumper sticker means or what time the local 100,000-watt GOP mouthpiece blasts Rush Limbaugh over the airwaves.

Conversely, being of a fairly blue cultural shade, I am quite familiar with "Avenue Q," Whole Foods, and Jon Stewart. So unsurprisingly, I fell into the middle of the spectrum. A couple of my work friends are solidly red.

It's funny how the red connotation here has completely separate overtones of "redneck," though - there is overlap, but they aren't the same at all.

The second is Surfergirl's blog entry about KenJen, the Jeopardy! machine who passed the million mark on Tuesday. After not seeing Jeopardy! forever, I've caught the KenJen show a couple times, and the guy is sublime. Letting people stay until they're dethroned is the best thing Jeopardy! has done since adjusting the answer dollar amounts.

Does anyone happen to remember a Navy contestant who gave Wink Martindale hell on Tic-Tac-Dough in the early eighties for what seemed like months? No? Just me? I need to get out more? Okay. Now I just have to think of a good drinking game to send to Slate.

I don't know if I should tell you this, but Brett thinks you look a lot like KenJen. I disagree.
