Finding New Music

It's tough out there. Good music is being made, but the record labels and freaking ClearChannel don't make it easy to find it.

Seeking out good new music is almost a second job for me. Here are some of the best sources that I've found:

  • Scenestars is an MP3 blog. I don't know if it's legal, and I don't care. The people that run it have pretty good taste.
  • iTunes is possibly the best single thing to happen to music in the last couple of years. The database is growing all the time to include more one-offs and hard to find songs. Twenty bucks in an account here can keep you fat and happy for awhile.
  • Salon.com's Wednesday Morning Download has a lot of random and political stuff, but at least one good find a week.
  • Pitchfork and PopMatters have good reviews and articles but don't post MP3s.
  • Large Hearted Boy posts a ton of MP3s, especially live tracks.
  • Find blogs of people with similar musical tastes and find out what they're listening to.

This works for me. It totally makes the process of finding new music fun again, and keeps the joy alive.

I'm glad you like my site! ;)
BTW, Pitchfork totally does have MP3's for download:

Thanks Rachel! That changes everything. Your site still has a better selection, though.
