The Lure of Audiobooks
Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at 4:58PM Friends of ours have generously lent us an enormous CD case filled with audiobooks. So far, I've listened to Snow Crash and part of The Diamond Age (couldn't get into it).
I've also enjoyed Don't Know Much About History and Hunter Davies' 1968 biography of The Beatles.
Best of all, though, has been Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. It's been fascinating listening on the commute, and Bryson delivers on a little bit about a lotta things. It ain't deep, but it shore is wide. Only problem is I can't retain the information nearly as well as when I read - it's all in one ear and out the other without rattling around inside - and I can't honestly say that I've read any of this stuff, but I can say that I have a really good idea what they're about.
Up next in audio land, the new David Sedaris.
I would consider getting a subscription to Audible.com, but right now, I think I'll refrain from buying the proverbial cow. I don't want to give anybody else $20/month. I'm looking at you, too, XM.
