Belkin KVM Switch Good. Fire Bad.
Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 6:23PM The Mac arrived yesterday. It is a thing of beauty. As I took it out of its impeccibly packaged uh, package, in some way it seemed that coming to reside in my humble house must be a step down for it. It deserves better than a chipboard desk.
It will take me a while to get comfortable with it. But change, while difficult, is often for the best. I'm starting to wonder why I didn't do this years ago (we've had a G3 iMac in our house for years, but I almost never used it). Still, I have to decide whether it really will become my main machine. Do I move e-mail to it? Can it synch with my Dell Axim? It seems silly not to move MP3s and iPod functionality to the Mac. I need to learn my way around Tiger - how to install and remove programs, optimize the OS, other stuff. And then, futz with GarageBand and eventually Logic Express. Yeeesss. Preecious.
It was obvious that my chipboard desk wasn't about to support two monitors (one of which is a CRT), so I had to get a KVM switch. I went to CompUSA and picked up the Belkin 2-porter with built-in audio support. Nice. The two computers now share a (Microsoft!) keyboard, (Microsoft!) two-button Mouse, and a set of speakers. The only drawback is that my ancient PC has VGA video imput and the Mac has DVI, so I have to use the DVI-VGA converter that Apple thoughtfully included. There is a noticeable difference. Also, because the Mac has only USB keyboard and mouse imputs, the PC keyboard input has to use a PS/2-USB converter.
