A Matter of Degrees

The Washington Post today has a couple of editorials about how history will judge George W. Bush's presidency.

Eric Foner argues that he's the worst in history.

Michael Lind counters that no, he's only the fifth worst.

My favorite line is from Lind's essay:

The fact that Bush followed the invasion of Afghanistan, which had sheltered al-Qaeda, with the toppling of Saddam Hussein, will puzzle historians for centuries. It is as though, after Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor, FDR had asked Congress to declare war on Argentina.
