Answer the Question
Sunday, February 5, 2006 at 8:24AM I understand that a slim majority of Americans support the President's domestic wiretap initiative. Certainly the President should have every tool at his disposal to fight terrorism. But most Americans don't support the President when he breaks the law - and that's what next week's Congressional hearings ought to determine.
From all of the equivocating that the administration has done since the story broke, I have yet to hear the administration satisfactorily explain the simple question of why. The explanation that the Constitution and the congressional approval for action against Iraq justify the wiretapping is exceedingly weak and I believe the right knows this. So what specifically is wrong with FISA that made circumventing it necessary? If the law is inadequate, shouldn't it be modified rather than ignored?
